Features

Secure Element Chip

Uses a CC EAL5+ certified secure element (ST33) — the same chips used in passports and banking cards. Resistant to physical extraction attacks.

5,500+ Supported Assets

Supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Polkadot, and thousands of tokens. The widest multi-chain support of any hardware wallet.

Ledger Live App

Full-featured companion app for managing assets, staking, buying crypto, and installing coin apps on your device.

DeFi via MetaMask

Connect to MetaMask for DeFi and dApp access while keeping your keys secure on the hardware device.

Staking Integration

Stake ETH, SOL, DOT, ATOM, and more directly through Ledger Live using integrated staking providers.

Bluetooth (Nano X+)

Ledger Nano X and newer models support Bluetooth for wireless connection to the Ledger Live mobile app.

Security

Ledger uses a dedicated secure element chip separate from the main microcontroller. Private keys are generated and stored exclusively in this chip — they never leave the device in unencrypted form.

The main controversy was Ledger Recover (2023), a subscription service that allows encrypted seed phrase backup via identity verification. This feature is opt-in and generated debate about firmware trustworthiness. Standard Ledger usage without Recover is unaffected.

How to Download & Set Up Ledger

1

Buy from official source

Only buy from ledger.com or authorized retailers (Amazon, Best Buy). Never buy a used Ledger device.

2

Download Ledger Live

Download from ledger.com/start. Verify the file hash if possible.

3

Initialize device

Follow on-screen setup. Choose 'Set up as new device'. Create a PIN (8 digits recommended).

4

Write down recovery phrase

Your 24-word recovery phrase appears one word at a time. Write on the provided Recovery Sheet. Verify it. Store securely offline.

5

Install coin apps

In Ledger Live, go to My Ledger → App catalog. Install apps for each cryptocurrency you want to use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).

6

Connect to wallets

Use Ledger Live for direct management, or connect to MetaMask (ETH), Electrum (BTC), or Phantom (SOL) for advanced use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Ledger hacked?
Ledger's customer database was breached in 2020, exposing customer email and shipping addresses (not private keys or funds). Ledger's hardware secure element was not compromised. However, this breach led to significant phishing campaigns targeting customers.
Is Ledger better than Trezor?
Ledger has a certified secure element chip (ST33) which Trezor's basic model lacks. Ledger supports more chains natively. However, Trezor is fully open-source while parts of Ledger's firmware are proprietary. Both are excellent choices.
Can Ledger be hacked?
Ledger's secure element chip makes physical attacks extremely difficult. Remote hacking is not possible when the device is offline. The main risks are phishing (tricking you to enter your seed phrase), supply chain attacks (rare), and malicious computer access.
Does Ledger work with MetaMask?
Yes. Ledger integrates directly with MetaMask for Ethereum and EVM chains. You use MetaMask as the interface while all signing happens on the Ledger device — your keys never touch the computer.
What happens if Ledger goes out of business?
Your funds are safe. The seed phrase is the only thing needed to recover access. You can use your 24-word phrase in any compatible wallet (Electrum, MetaMask, Trezor, etc.) to restore all your assets.
