How to Stake Polkadot — Complete Guide 2026
Polkadot offers the highest staking APY among major chains at 12–15%. Nominate up to 16 validators using Polkadot.js or Nova Wallet, with rewards paid every 24 hours.
Important: Slashing Risk
Polkadot has slashing — validator misbehavior can result in loss of your staked DOT. Only nominate reputable, high-uptime validators and diversify across 8–16 validators.
Staking Methods
Direct Nomination
Bond DOT directly and nominate up to 16 validators. Requires meeting the minimum active bond (~250 DOT). Highest potential rewards and full control.
~250 DOT minimumNomination Pools
Join a nomination pool with as little as 1 DOT. On-chain, trustless pools that aggregate smaller stakes to meet nomination thresholds collectively.
1 DOT minimumHow to Stake DOT — Step by Step
Set up a wallet
Use Polkadot.js extension (browser), Nova Wallet (mobile), or SubWallet (browser/mobile). For large holdings, use a Ledger hardware wallet integrated with Polkadot.js.
Acquire DOT
Purchase DOT on Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance and transfer to your wallet. Keep some DOT unbonded for transaction fees.
Navigate to staking
Go to staking.polkadot.network or Polkadot.js Apps (polkadot.js.org/apps). Connect your wallet.
Bond your DOT
Choose 'Nominator' → 'Start Nominating'. Select how much DOT to bond (cannot be used until unbonded). Choose a reward destination — restaking (stash) gives compounding.
Select validators
Choose 8–16 validators. Use the auto-select feature or manually pick reputable operators like Figment, P2P, or Chorus One. Check their commission, identity, and uptime history.
Confirm nomination
Submit your nomination transaction. Your stake becomes active at the start of the next era (24 hours). Active nominators receive rewards each era.
