Ethereum Client Diversity

Client diversity is critical to Ethereum's resilience. A single client with over 33% of validators poses a network risk — bugs could cause mass slashing or halted finality.

Consensus Clients

Consensus clients implement the Beacon Chain protocol, handling validator duties, attestations, and finality.

Execution Clients

Execution clients process transactions, manage state, and execute smart contracts. They pair with consensus clients via the Engine API.

Why Client Diversity Matters

Bug Risk

If one client has over 33% of validators and suffers a critical bug, it could halt Ethereum finality. Over 66% would risk mass slashing.

Recommended Action

Node operators should avoid running Prysm or Geth as they are supermajority clients. Choose Lighthouse, Teku, Nimbus, Nethermind, or Besu instead.

Staker Responsibility

When choosing a staking provider, ask which clients they run. Providers using minority clients contribute to network health.
